EDITORIAL

Wai-Shin Chan takes over as Executive Director of ASrIA. He has been with ASrIA for 6 months and has a background as an SRI analyst focusing on the Asian region. ASrIA has been actively engaged around the region; look out for the launch of our key report on pensions, The Time to Lead is Now: The Adoption of ESG Analysis by Asian Government Pension Funds, on 22nd July. We also have a number of events coming up, including an ASrIA briefing on solar on 9th July.

ASrIA members have also been active. We congratulate Standard Chartered Bank in coming runner up in the FT Sustainable Bank of the Year Award. ASrIA member FTSE have created new investment tools and related indexes to support the shift to a low carbon economy, as well as combining with the Stock Exchange of Thailand to launch a Shariah-compliant index.

  New Executive Director at ASrIA  
    The Board is pleased to announce that Wai-Shin Chan was appointed as Executive Director to succeed Claire McLetchie as of 1st June 2009. Wai-Shin has been with ASrIA for six months and has brought tremendous energy, skill and enthusiasm to his role. ASrIA also wishes Claire all the best for her future.  
       
  ASrIA Briefing on Renewable Energy in China  
    A leading analyst from SAM, an ASrIA member, will visit the region and provide a briefing on renewable energy and developments in the solar power industry in China for ASrIA members and other interested parties on 9th July. Other exciting briefing events are being lined up for the coming year.  
       
  ASrIA Participates in Sustainable Investment Training to Financial Institution in Beijing  
    ASrIA Executive Director, Wai-Shin Chan will participate in a workshop hosted by ASrIA member, IFC, for a major Asset Management company in Beijing, on 25th June. ASrIA welcomes invitations to provide or arrange training services on sustainable investment and environmental, social and governance practices for financial institutions.  
       
  ASrIA to Launch Pensions Report  
   

On 22nd July ASrIA will launch a ground-breaking report, The Time to Lead is Now: The Adoption of ESG Analysis by Asian Government Pension Funds. The project has been funded by ASrIA member the Asian Development Bank (ADB). Full details and an official invitation will be circulated soon.

 
       
  ASrIA Participates in Roundtable with NGO’s in Taipei  
    ASrIA joined a roundtable event with representatives from Taiwanese environmental and labour organisations on 16th June.  
       
  ASrIA Promotes Carbon Disclosure at the Queen’s Birthday Party in Hong Kong  
   

ASrIA operated a “booth” promoting Carbon Disclosure and providing details on ASrIA and our membership at an event hosted by the British Consulate-General in Hong Kong on 18th June. The booth was well attended and valuable contacts were made with other civil society organisations working on climate change issues.

 
       
  ASrIA Survey on Awareness of Climate Change Among Asset Managers in Asia  
   

ASrIA would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank the asset managers from around the Asian region who participated in our recent survey or participated in face to face interviews concerning climate change and investments.

  Standard Chartered Bank Runner-up in Sustainable Bank of the Year Award  
    ASrIA congratulates our member Standard Chartered Bank for being the runner-up in the Sustainable Bank of the Year Award at the FT Sustainable Banking Awards. Meanwhile the overall Sustainable Bank of the year award went to Triodos Bank and a Chinese Bank – Industrial Bank of China, won the Asian Sustainable Bank of the Year Award.  
       
  FTSE Creates Low Carbon Investment Tools and Related Indexes  
    ASrIA member, FTSE creates new investment tools supporting global shift towards a low carbon economy and also expanded its Environmental Opportunities (EO) index series with five regional indexes, covering the US, Japan, Europe, Asia-Pacific and Asia-Pacific ex-Japan, and two others covering the UK.  
       
  FTSE and SET to launch Shariah-compliant index for Thai market  
    ASrIA Member, FTSE Group (“FTSE”), the global index provider, and the Stock Exchange of Thailand (“SET”) expand the FTSE SET Index Series with the addition of the FTSE SET Shariah Index.  
       
  Indonesia Launches Responsible Investment Index  
    The Indonesian Stock Exchange on Monday launched a sustainable and responsible investment (SRI) index with a leading environmental organisation to raise investor awareness of companies' environmental and social track records. The Index was compiled by ASrIA member OWW Consulting.  
       
  Vontobel Group invests in Malaysia  
    The Vontoble Group, parent of ASrIA member Vietnam Holdings, has selected Malaysia as one of the investment destinations of Zurich-based Vontobel Group through its Vontobel Fund - Global Responsibility Asia (Ex Japan)  
       
  ADB Report Reviews Economics of Climate Change in S.E. Asia  
    ASrIA member ADB published a report, reviewing the economics of climate change in the Southeast Asian region. 'The Economics of Climate Change in Southeast Asia: A Regional Review', confirms that the region is highly vulnerable to climate change and that the current global economic crisis offers Southeast Asia an opportunity to start a transition towards a climate-resilient and low-carbon economy.  
       
  StanChart on Track to Lend Microlenders $500 mln  
    ASrIA member Standard Chartered is on track to lend $500 million to microlenders, or banks for the poor, helping an industry hit by funding problems as a result of the financial crisis..

  Banks Move to Scale Back Socially Responsible Investing  
    Several banks are cutting back their analysis of companies’ socially responsible policies, according to Thomson Reuters, which does a regular survey of equity analysts.  
       
  Guidelines for Corporate Disclosure of Costs of Climate Change Are Proposed  
    The Climate Disclosure Standards Board issues a proposed framework that would align corporate reporting of climate change with principles and objectives of financial reporting rules.  
       
  Damage to Ecosystems Can Lead to Financial Losses and Reputational Risks for Companies  
    Report by Eurosif and oekem research finds that risks to five industrial sectors can be offset by attention to biodiversity. The financial services sector faces risks and opportunities as well.  
       
  Global Survey of ESG Policies  
    The Global Survey of Environmental, Social and Governance Policies provides many links relevant to ESG in the Asian context.  
       
  Social Stock Exchange Asia (SSXA) to be Launched in Singapore  
    The Social Stock Exchange Asia (SSXA) aims to provide a trading platform and a capital raising mechanism for Asian Social Enterprises (SEs), including both for-profit and not-for-profit entities with a social mission.  
       
  S&P Launch New Shariah Compliant Index  
    The S&P/TSX 60 Shariah Index recategorizes equities on the S&P/TSX 60 and excludes all those that do not comply with Islamic law.
