ASrIA Launches Low Carbon Investment Portal; LCIA Project Roadshow a Success |
|
| |
|
The Low Carbon Investment in Asia (LCIA) online portal is live. It offers a solid foundation to understand Asia's shift to a low-carbon economy. It contains, for example, a database of over 200 reports and websites for investment professionals and interested parties. Members interested in highlighting their low-carbon financial services and products in Asia on the portal should contact us at: lciaproject@asria.org.
The portal, with keen support from the British Government's Foreign & Commonwealth Office, will also house a training module for investment professionals as part of the project. The training will be at: http://portal.asria.org/LCIA/index.html. In July and August Joint Executive Directors David St Maur Sheil and Erik Floyd, along with Yun Ling, Greater China Project Manager, Hendrik Rosenthal, Sustainability Manager, and Dave Doré, Research Manager, met with 35 investment professionals in Hong Kong, Mumbai, Shanghai and Singapore to garner feedback on our project findings. A hearty thank you to all who participated! |

Cities of the future – Investing in sustainability leaders
The property sector in Asia continues to be defined by leaders and laggards in the sustainability space. Developers, such as Swire Properties in Hong Kong and City Developments in Singapore, that are improving energy efficiency and reducing carbon emissions are leapfrogging competitors in terms of capability for planning and executing green building projects. These leaders are reaping reputational benefits and reduced operating costs, catching the eye of the responsible investor. Short-term market sentiment continues to be driven by sustainability laggards however. This is particularly true for the sizzling real estate market in Hong Kong, which is still built on more traditional fundamentals – tight land supply and the ability of the biggest developers to influence land prices.
Singapore has taken a stance in support of green buildings by implementing advanced building codes. Progress is being made in China as well, tightening the regulatory noose around inefficient building practices. Even for laissez-faire Hong Kong, regulatory change may be in the pipeline. It will not be the laggards who will be in the best position to profit from this change. ASrIA will be speaking more about sustainability and property opportunities at Sustainable Cities 2010, to be held in Singapore September 27-30. - The ASrIA team
