Carbon Disclosure Project Report 2008 —Asia ex-Japan

Event Summary

ASrIA's Carbon Disclosure Project collaboration with CDP and Merrill Lynch strengthened this year. For the 2008 report, 220 leading Asian companies were surveyed concerning their policies on climate change and carbon emissions. The responses offer fresh insights into the emerging competition between Asian governments and corporates on carbon trends which will affect the materiality of climate change for companies and investors.

Key points of the 2008 report include:

  1. Improved response rate with significant new responses from leading Taiwan electronic supply companies;
  2. Risk of weather effects on Asian companies as climate change unfolds; and
  3. Wait-and-see attitude by many Asian companies for government policy guidance relating to climate change.

During the last six years (2003-2008) the CDP has invited institutional investors to sign a single global request for disclosure of information regarding greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. In doing so, it has created one of the largest ever collaborations of global institutional investment capital - with over US$57 trillion of assets under management in 2008. The information requests have historically been sent to the largest global companies by market capitalization. Beginning in 2006, ASrIA has worked to expand the universe of Asian companies receiving the CDP sample.
