Event Summary

A hugely successful event, with over 240 attendees from across a wide range of Taiwanese industry sectors.

The ASrIA CDP Asia Ex-Japan Report for the 2008 round of the CDP Process highlighted the emergence of Taiwan as a regional leader in responding to the CDP process, primarily thanks to the participation of the Taiwan electronics sector which convoyed into CDP last year.  In order to support that momentum, ASrIA and BCSD-Taiwan partnered to raise further awareness about the CDP process this year.  BCSD-Taiwan, on behalf of ASrIA, has been in contact with Taiwanese companies on both the main CDP initiative and the related Supply Chain initiative, to ensure that they are all aware of the process and have received questionnaires.

Additionally ASrIA and BCSD-Taiwan jointly organised this event, which was split into two parts.

The morning session, the ‘Carbon Disclosure Forum’, was opened with welcoming addresses by Albert Lee, CEO and Chairman of Merrill Lynch Securities (Taiwan) Ltd, and by Richard Lee, Executive Director of the Acer Foundation.  The event was geared towards raising awareness and general understanding and support for the CDP process.   A key objective was to encourage corporates which had not yet signed up to the process to engage with it.  The importance and value of CDP to investors was also emphasized, with presentations by ASrIA and Merrill-Lynch.

The afternoon session, the ‘Carbon Inventory Management Workshop’, was geared towards providing more technical advice and support to companies.   Speakers from TSMC, AUO and Acer, who have had direct management experience with the CDP process provided very valuable advice and feedback to participants.

The event ended with a Q&A session that lasted well over an hour, highlighting the very high level of interest that was maintained right through the day.   A number of key issues emerged from the conference, in particular the need for line-managers to have support and advice on gaining senior management support for the process.
