Ms. Yuko Sakita
Journalist, Environment Counselor

Ms. Sakita graduated from Rikkyou University in 1974. After 11 years of magazine editing with Syueisya Inc, she became a free-lance journalist. Looking at issues from an ordinary citizen’s point of view, she has been lecturing and writing on environmental problems in recent years, focusing mainly on how to create a sustainable society. She is active in promoting environmental education as an environmental counselor registered with the Ministry of the Environment.

In 2001, she became a member of “Meeting on Creation of the Wanokuni for the 21st Century,” the Prime Minister’s private informal discussion group. At these discussions, she especially promoted the idea of the importance of an individual’s lifestyle and the importance of reviewing business activities, and methods to create an active citizens society with partnerships.

Currently, she is a member of the following government committees:
Ministry of the Environment
“Central Environment Council (Sustainable Planning Section)
“Policy Review Committee”
“Round Table on Chemicals and the Environment”
Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry
“Council on Promotion of 3R in Textile Products”

In addition, she is a member of various environmental and recycling committees with the Metropolis of Tokyo, district wards and cities.

With reference to the activities of environmental NGOs, she is responsible for the following:
Secretariat for “GENKIGOMI Network for Sustainability”
* This group is an information exchange network of citizens’ movements around Japan which aim at achieving a sustainable society.
Representative for “Shinjuku Environmental Information Network”
* The group is a loose network of citizens, businesses and ward administrative officials which aim at achieving an environmental city in Shinjyuku.

Her publications include: “Dieting garbage for everyone” (Godo publishing, Inc.), and “A day we could see garbage Zero Tokyo” (Nippo, Inc. and others) Her editing work include: (authoring and editing as “GENKIGOMI” Network for Sustainability)
“I want to learn future from the garbage 2 ~ sustainable society will be born from businesses and citizens”
“Environmental community-forming that connects people to people, heart to heart ~ 75 examples,” etc.
