Position Overview:
The Co-ordinator of Chinese Affairs will be responsible for leadership and management of the AccountAbility China office and AccountAbility operations in the greater China region. The position will report directly to the Chief Executive based in Geneva, and additionally will have frequent interactions with other regional offices and the head office in London for support from the departments of human resources, communications, membership, finance, and programmes (research). This position will directly hire and manage China staff, ensure proper compliance with local laws and regulations. It requires someone with a diverse background able to travel abroad frequently and manage several streams of intense research and partnership-based work. Thus, this is both a content-creation position as well as being publicly-facing.

Duties & Responsibilities:
Oversee key AccountAbility programmes in China, roughly broken down into three areas: 1) Responsible Competitiveness (report publishing, article writing, translation, medium-term regional government and business strategy work (5-10 year), long-term central-level work(15-20 year)); 2) represent the Global Leadership Network in China with partner Chinese Federation for CSR; 3) AccountAbility proper, which includes fee for service work, and ,with the AA communications managers, assuring proper representation of the AccountAbility brand and be comfortable dealing with government and other partners in a transparent manner.

Ensure proper flow of knowledge about China across teams: Keep international management team and staff up to date on all programmes (research) related information and developments, developing system-wide staff capacity to manage impacts of China work on the rest of AccountAbility's portfolio and vice-versa. Stay informed about research and trends, communicating these frequently with staff in other AccountAbility offices. Collaborate with regional AccountAbility offices in London, Washington DC and Sao Paolo to oversee programmes in China.  Work with other emerging AccountAbility staff presence in Southeast Asia, South Asia, and the Middle East.

Legal compliance: Coordinate final stages of setting up compliant AccountAbility China office, including, if need be, finalisation of registration process and determining office location, office equipment, etc. Coordinate with London finance department, ensure local taxes and payroll is handled correctly and according to local Chinese law.

Network frequently with other organisations, (potential) funders, and (potential) clients. With help of AA networks, raise and maintain funds for programmatic areas and future projects. Represent AccountAbility by attending and speaking at different forums.

Skills Required:

  • Master’s degree or Ph.D. in related field of study, e.g., International Relations, Economics, or Management.
  • Three to five years prior experience working with international company or organisation in all-English environments.
  • Experience with international aid organisations.
  • Ability to pursue and secure deals with companies on advisory work.
  • Thorough understanding of basic economics and corporate social responsibility literature and trends.
  • Minimum six years professional experience, with minimum of 3+ years in management capacity.
  • Prior success working closely with and building relationships with staff, partnerships, clients, members, and donors.
  • Experience taking initiative to balance multiple priorities simultaneously.
  • Successful implementation of wide range of tasks with minimal supervision.
  • Prior success working closely and building relationships with diverse groups of stakeholders.
  • Ability and desire to travel frequently internationally and domestically.
  • Effectiveness working in non-profit organization that is focused on maintaining high quality work and low overhead.
  • Prior experience with fast-paced, growth-oriented global or regional organization(s).
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English and native Chinese.
