Good Migrations? BT, Corporate Social Responsibility and the Geography of Jobs.

11 March 2004

SustainAbility

'Good Migrations? BT, Corporate Social Responsibility and the Geography of Jobs', the latest report by SustainAbility commissioned by British Telecom (BT), is to examine the issue of off-shore outsourcing from a corporate social responsibility (CSR) perspective.

the report  includes:
- An examination of the global trend of offshoring and evaluation of its implications for CSR
- A study of the specific impacts of BT's offshoring decisions, both in the UK and in India
- Strategic advice to companies interested in exploring offshoring and corporate social responsibility

The report concludes that on balance offshoring's benefits outweigh its negative impacts. But it also presents some important reservations, particularly concerning the way that offshoring is handled. It is here that corporate social responsibility has an important part to play both in reducing the impacts on people losing their jobs as well as ensuring that the new operations, mainly in developing countries, are run responsibly.
