National Conference on Corporate Social Responsibility in New Delhi

27 November, 2004

Centre for Social Responsibility

Bridging the widening socio-economic gap is the biggest business challenge of our times. Globalisation will not succeed unless poor can be brought into the market economy. It is because of this that the Centre for Social Responsibility committed to ensuring justice for all had organised the first National Conference on Corporate Social Responsibility in New Delhi 9th & 10th November 2004 in New Delhi. The event turned out to be a grand success.

The Conference speakers included Shivraj Patil, the Union Home Minister, Dr Karan Singh MP, Chief Justice P N Bhagwati, Member UN Human Rights Committee, Mark Runacres, UK Dy High Commissioner, Chief Justice A M Ahmadi, Chairman Centre for Corporate Governance, P Shankar, the Central Vigilance Commissioner of India, Pradeep Baijal, Chairman, Telephone Regulatory Authority of India, Vinod Dhall, Acting Chairman Competition Commission, Dilip Ranjekar of WIPRO, Uddesh Kohli of Global Compact, Dr Kondap Vice Chancellor NMIMS, Dr Shailaja Sharma from Shell, Rakesh Bharti Mittal from Bharti Telecom, Sean Doolan of DFID, Amanda Greene from Give Foundation, N S Kanan, CFO ICICI Bank, and others from industry such as TATAs, ITC, GAIL, ONGC, Shipping Corporation, Times of India and so on. Dr Madhav Mehra, President World Council for Corporate Governance delivered the keynote address.

The recommendations of the conference together with report and conference feedback are available on our website www.csrglobal.org. These proceedings will eventually be brought in the form of a book "Turning CSR Rhetoric into Reality".

A key recommendation of the conference was that there was an urgent need to develop synergy between the major players in the field of corporate social responsibility to meet the challenges of global warming and widening disparities.

It was decided that conclusions arrived at this Conference should be dovetailed into the agenda of the follow up events, supported by the Centre for Social Responsibility such as:

6th International Conference on Corporate Governance  12-13 May 2005, London
7th World Congress on Environment Management        10-12 June 2005, Palampur  (HP), India

Details of these events, are available on our website [www.csrglobal.org and partner sites such as www.iodonline.com, www.wcfcg.net, www.wem.net]

We would look forward to your active support and participation in the above events and develop local partnerships to achieve 'triple bottomline' objectives.

With regards,
