SOMPO JAPAN INSURANCE INC Press Release

This Corporate Social Responsibility Report 2004 is a non-financial report of SOMPO JAPAN INSURANCE INC. for the fiscal year 2003. Responding to the increasing demand for corporate integrity, Japanese corporate initiatives for a sustainable society are growing. We believe that high level of transparency, disclosure and communication are indispensable for these efforts. This year's report, unlike the previous reports that were merely a translated version of the Japanese edition, was produced as an independent publication with more readers outside of Japan in mind.

This is yet another effort by Sompo Japan whose shares have been selected for various SRI (Socially Responsible Investment) funds and indexes such as the Dow Jones Sustainability Indexes and FTSE4Good. Some of the key features are as follows;

• Strong management's commitment on mainstreaming CSR within the corporate through people-centred approach
• Summary of customer-needs based products/services and comperehensive insurances for environmental risk solution
• Diverse initiatives on corporate citizenship activites such as puppet theater project on tunami disarter prevention education
• Unique environmental management measures such as on-line environmental literacy program
• New initiatives on stakeholder communication, such as multi-stakeholders participatory workshop & online discussion forum
• Original edition for the English version, with clear and concise (40 pages) structure
• Accessible layouts and easy to read texts, avoiding specialized terms and jargons.
• Written and edited by company employees with the cooperation of an CSR specialized NGO
• Key performance figures on each sections
• Third party comments from several professional in the field of environment, sustainability, CSR and SRI
