City Developments Limited Rallies To Provide Aid To Tsunami Victims
City Developments Limited Press Release
31 December, 2004
Shocked and saddened by the tsunami calamity that has struck so near home, City Developments Limited (CDL) has embarked on various undertakings to help in the relief efforts.
CDL hopes to use its resources to provide channels for the public, its business partners, tenants and staff to contribute money and supplies to bring some relief to the millions of victims of this tragedy in South and South-east Asia.
Some of the CDL programmes which have been embarked on include:
- CDL Dollar-for-Dollar Staff Donation Drive
Supporting the staff’s initiative to contribute money in aid of the victims, CDL will match every dollar donated by staff. All money collected will be given to the Singapore Red Cross Society - Tidal Waves Asia fund. To-date, after 1 day of collection, S$40,000 has been raised from 300 staff. CDL will double this amount to S$80,000.
- Mercy Relief City Centre
CDL has offered a city premise at Corporate Building, 144 Robinson Road to Mercy Relief, as a collection point for the public to drop off donations and supplies. This will be a central and convenient location for office workers to place their contributions. In addition, CDL staff will also volunteer at the centre which will open on Monday, 3 January morning. CDL's complex managers at other CDL buildings will also help collect donations from tenants and send them to the Mercy Relief Centre. Mercy Relief is a charitable, non-governmental humanitarian organisation which has started a donation drive for the victims and has received overwhelming support from the public.
- Generous contribution by Chinatown Point tenants and proprietors
CDL is also encouraging its tenants to donate generously in money or kind. At Chinatown Point, the Management Committee and tenants have banded together to start a collection centre. To-date, they have collected more than 30 boxes of non-perishable items. Tins of biscuits, milk, powdered drinks, blankets, clothes, mattresses and medication have been collected. The collection will continue till 4 January 2005 and the supplies will be transferred to Mercy Relief for their distribution to disaster areas.
- Sponsor for the fund raising opening reception for Russel Wong’s Photography Exhibition
CDL is the sponsor for the opening event of Hotshots Asian Icons, an exhibition by celebrity photographer Russel Wong at the Singapore Tyler Print Institute. All proceeds raised from ticket sales at S$100 each and all donations will go to the Singapore Red Cross Society - Tidal Waves Asia fund. CDL management has also been encouraging its business associates, tenants and staff to support this event.
- Hong Leong Foundation's Donates S$200,000
Hong Leong Foundation, the charity arm of the Hong Leong Group has also donated S$200,000 to the Singapore Red Cross Society - Tidal Waves Asia fund. CDL is part of the Hong Leong Group.
Although the provisions made may be small in comparison to the colossal aid needed to help the victims and their families who have lost their lives and homes, we believe that every little effort counts and will make a difference.
