REEEP Disburses 1Mn for Global Clean Energy Projects

Renewable Energy & Engergy Efficiency Partnership (REEEP) Press Release

12 May, 2005

The Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Partnership (REEEP) has announced just over 1 million Euros of funding for clean energy projects in Africa, Asia, North America, Latin America and Europe.

There are 18 newly-funded REEEP projects focused on accelerating the market development of clean energy. They range from blueprints for national renewable energy policies to support for clean energy funds. In keeping with REEEP's remit, half of the new projects focus on establishing policy and regulatory models, and half on new financing techniques. Two thirds of the projects are in the renewable energy sector, one third are in energy efficiency.

REEEP's International Director, Marianne Osterkorn said:

"The projects we're backing promise to deliver replicable models for renewable and energy efficient development. Our partnership of governments, NGOs and businesses is helping establish a stable global marketplace for clean energy."

"I would like to thank all REEEP's donors, especially the main donor, the UK government, and our most recent donor, the Canadian government, for making this dispersal of funds possible. We would also like to thank all the organisations which submitted project proposals, and of course our regional secretariats for providing support for the entire project call," she added.

REEEP's latest projects include assisting the Mexican government develop its national renewable energy policy and developing a new financing mechanism for energy-efficient district heating in Russia. These are the first REEEP projects in Mexico and Russia.

Mexico is not the only government with which REEEP is now working directly. China too has requested REEEP support - in the development of a national roadmap for its wind industry.

REEEP is also making its first forays into Central and Eastern Europe; backing small and medium-sized clean energy enterprises in Poland and the Czech Republic, and helping remove barriers to residential energy efficiency in Moldova, Armenia, Ukraine, and Russia.

REEEP is continuing its work in supporting the establishment of dedicated clean energy funds. Lessons learned in helping raise $30mn for an Indian private equity fund last year will be applied in new funds in Brazil and Asia.

REEEP is continuing its support for research into legal barriers to international trade in clean energy technologies and is financing the world's first comprehensive database of every renewable energy law currently in force.

REEEP is also funding projects which will provide models for poverty alleviation through clean energy. They include developing financing models for solar water heating in Brazil and the Caribbean, and promoting policy models for energy efficient municipal water supply in South Africa, and photovoltaic village power in Mongolia.
