There is movement by stakeholders such as investor groups to try and press for more comprehensive reporting and transparency by the airline industry on carbon emissions impacts and policies. To date, however, there has been little in the way of constructive industry response. Independent sustainability research for investors has also been limited. Relevant initiatives include:

  • The Carbon Disclosure Project www.cdproject.net now in its fifth year is trying to engage the sector as part of CDP. In the most recent CDP report, only two airlines out of five that responded answered the questionnaire.
  • The insurance industry has also been a persistent voice on climate change issues, especially post-Katrina. UNEP FI has been trying to shine a light on the financial impact of environmental risks and to advocate for the inclusion of environmental risks into corporate financial reporting and processes.
