Operational Efficiency

Operational practices can play a significant role in maximizing fuel efficiencies. Such practices include ensuring optimum loadings on flights and flying at optimum flight speeds and altitude wherever possible.

Environmental and Sustainability Reporting

An increasing number of airlines are publishing environmental or sustainability reports. The extent and quality of reporting is however highly variable across the sector. In particular the presentation of a broad range of performance indicators and different metrics between airlines make any industry comparisons difficult at best.

Lax and uneven reporting can also reflect a lack of board oversight. Few airlines appear to have a specific board level executive overseeing environmental policy.

Environmental Management Systems (EMS)

Throughout the sector, and with the exception of the Chinese airlines, there is an increasing move toward the implementation of EMS and in many cases certification to the international environmental management standard ISO 14001. However, this is an area where there are many divergent approaches and where information made publicly available though environmental and sustainability reports is surprisingly limited.

Cathay Pacific	Cathay Pacific catering services certificated to ISO 14001
Singapore Airlines	All eight units in the SIA Group - that have put in place an Environmental Management System (EMS) - have successfully converted their EMS to the revised standard
KLM Air France	KLM’s environmental management system received ISO 14001 certification in 1999 and EMAS certification in 2000. Both certifications have been renewed since then All KLM’s activities with the exception of ground operations at the outstations are ISO 14001 certified Air France Industries aims to have IMS (integrated management system) certification for 90% of its industrial sites by mid-2007
JAL	The JAL Group is promoting efforts to acquire ISO 14001 accreditation, mainly in field operations with relatively high environmental impact. By fiscal 2005, the company had acquired accreditation at eight sites
SAS	The long-term goal is for all environmental management systems in the Group to be documented and comply with the international ISO 14001 environmental management standard
Lufthansa	Lufthansa CityLine has operated an environmental management system covering all business areas and the company’s three locations since 1999. It continues to be the only airline worldwide to be certified in accordance with both the European eco audit regulations EMAS and ISO 14001 Lufthansa Technik aircraft maintenance certified to ISO 14001
