On June 25th The Development Bank of Japan became the first
Japanese bank to sign the United Nations Environment Programme
(UNEP) Statement by Financial Institutions on the Environment
and Sustainable Development.
Takashi Matsukawa, the Deputy Governor of the DBJ, during his
speech made at the signing ceremony in London, explained the
reasons why the Bank has decided to make the commitment of signing
the statement:
- We at the DBJ have been supporting and promoting environmental
awareness for many years, and to formalize our commitment to
sustainable development we have decided to sign and fully support
the statement. It is our firm belief that financial institutions
should have a clear mandate to support the environment.
As the first Japanese bank to sign this statement, we plan
to cooperate with other signatories to make the best of our
role and to encourage other financial institutions in Japan
as well as other Asian countries to prioritise the environment
in their operations. -
UNEP FI and its signatories look forward to a long and fruitful
relationship with DBJ. EcoSecurities - A UNEP FI ASSOCIATE MEMBER
