The two-days' conference will provide a forum for business leaders, industrialists, researchers, NGOs, and government policy makers to discuss strategies and management tools toward industrial sustainability. Participants will benefit from the opportunity to share experiences with a wide range of international experts from countries around Asia, Europe, and the US. Ultimately, the conference goal is to create a partnership between industry leaders and government to encourage businesses to seek returns on all three aspects of the triple bottom line - economic development, social development, and environmental protection. The conference plans to offer business participants concrete tools, business cases and programs of action to help ensure that profits are delivered in a sustainable manner. The conference will also offer perspectives and strategies for policy makers to help promote industrial sustainability at the corporate and national levels.

Following on-site production, the edited webcast will be continuously aired on the internet under Globalspeak.com, and outreach website productions produced by the US Department of Commerce (DoC) Foreign Commercial Services offices. The webcasting medium allows this positive message to reach an extensive audience of internationally-minded business people around the world.

 

 



The Conference Goals are:
l. Promote an international exchange among business, government, and non-governmental organizations of experience and information on government policies and business strategies for improving the industrial sustainability.
2. By sharing the best practices and proven management tools, demonstrate the business cases of environmental excellence.
3. Provide an opportunity to establish professional contacts and further cooperative efforts among participants.

"Environmental performance evaluation and benchmarking for the pulp & paper sector - trends in forest certification and in wood products and processes."

Al Fry is the Program manager of WBCSD for Natural Resources (Fresh Water, Forests and Biodiversity) since 1996. He has a professional background in environment and sustainable development. He prepared 37 case studies for inclusion in Changing Course, A Global Business Perspective on Development and the Environment, a publication of BCSD for the Rio Earth Summit in 1992. During 1992-1995, he was a consultant to various business and UN organizations. Recent publications include Business and Climate Change, Case Studies in Greenhouse Gas Reduction (1997), Industry, Fresh Water and Sustainable Development (1998), and Partnerships in Practice (2000)

Eiichiro Adachi is a senior researcher and head of Eco-business cluster at The Japan Research Institute, Limited, which was founded in 1989 and sponsored by companies in Sumitomo group. He majored in mathematical economics in Hitotsubashi university and participated in many environmental protecting activities.

After a period as an industrial analyst, Mr. Adachi is now engaged in environmental screening for the UBS Japanese Eco-fund. He is the co-author of "The illustration of environmental problems for business enterprise". He was a part-time assistant professor in Doshisha university in 2001, and is
also a member of Asia Pacific Roundtable Cleaner Production (APRCP) Board of Trustees.


Fatima Reyes

"Environmental Management Accounting (EMA): Linking Corporate ESH with Business Value"

Fatima Reyes is a Certified Public Accountant from the Philippines. She holds a Master in Business Administration degree from De La Salle University in Manila.

Ms. Reyes is the Chair of the Environmental Accounting Committee of the Philippine Institute of Certified Public Accountants (PICPA), the national organization of accountants in the country. She has developed and conducted environmental accounting-related seminars as part of PICPA's Continuing Professional Education Program. She has also trained various business professionals in Singapore, the Philippines and Vietnam on environmental management accounting techniques and approaches. Ms. Reyes was instrumental in the inclusion of environmental accounting in the new undergraduate accountancy curriculum in the Philippines.

Also a professor of accounting and finance in several schools and universities in Manila, Ms. Reyes is a member of the Steering Committee of the newly-formed Environmental Management Accounting Network-Asia Pacific (EMAN-AP).

Dr. J. Y. Sung is the president of LG Institute of LG Institute of Environment, Safety & Health since 1999. He got the Ph.D. degree of Chemical Engineering from University of Minnesota, USA, in 1981. He worked for LG-Caltex Oil Corp. during 1998-1997 as the director of several divisions, including Technical R&D Center, Production, and Production Service.

Dr. Sung now is also the adjunct professor of the School of Environmental Engineering, Pohang University of Science, and the Department of Chemical Engineering, Technology and Kyounghee University, in Korea. He is the co-author of two books, "Energy and Environment" and "Overcoming National Crisis Through Technological Development".

Dr. Sung is the Chair of Environment Division, Korean National Expert Council, of Policy Group, Green Purchasing Network, and of Counterplan Division on Climate Change Convention, Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

"Placing Environmental Issues at the Core of Business Management, and Shaping the Future Through Environmental Technology."

Ms. Masayo Hasegawa is the Project Manager, Environmental Affairs Division of Toyota Motor Corporation. She joined Toyota Motor Corporation in February 1999 after working twelve years at the Sasakawa Peace Foundation (a grant-making foundation in Japan) as the program officer in charge of global environmental issues.

Ms. Hasegawa was also a visiting research fellow of Keio Research Institute at SFC, Keio University Shonan Fujisawa Campus where she served as the National Program Director of LEAD Japan (Leadership for Environment and Development-Japan) from April 1997 to January 2001. She also served as the Director of Special Projects-Japan at the Woods Hole Research Center in Massachusetts (U.S.A) as a voluntary basis from April 1997 to January 1999.

Ms. Hasegawa received a bachelor's degree in sociology from Kwansei Gakuin University in Japan and a master's degree in international relations with a focus on global environmental policy from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University in the United States.

"From Benchmarking to Eco-Efficiency: examples from Australia"

Professor van Berkel holds the inaugural position as Chair in Cleaner Production at Curtin University of Technology. He manages the Centre of Excellence in Cleaner Production - a state government initiative to promote Cleaner Production and Eco-Efficiency through technical assistance, professional development, information dissemination and policy dialogue. He also convenes the Western Australian Sustainable Industry Group - a network of business, public sector, environmental and engineering professionals dedicated to a cleaner and more competitive Western Australia.

Professor van Berkel has 13 years experience in Cleaner Production research, training and consultancy, mainly in Europe, Asia and Australia. His research interest has been in the development and evaluation of tools and strategies for promoting the uptake of Cleaner Production and Eco-Efficiency in particular among small to medium sized enterprises.

Professor van Berkel holds a BAgrSci and MAgrSci in Environmental Sciences and Engineering from Wageningen Agricultural State University (The Netherlands) and a PhD in Environmental Sciences from University of Amsterdam (The Netherlands).

Tauni is the program manager for the Sustainable Development project at the WBCSD; the project includes 26 of the worlds' largest companies. The goal of the SDR project is to improve Sustainable Development reporting of WBCSD members.

Tauni has been active in the area of environmental economics for almost 10 years. She finished her Ph.D. thesis on the economic impact of international environmental policy at the university of St. Gallen in Switzerland in International Environmental Economics.

She is a qualified investment banker, specializing in fixed income, structured finance and asset/ liability management. Tauni's most recent appointment prior to joining WBCSD, was as Managing Director of the Dow Jones Sustainability Group Index in Zurich, Switzerland.


Tessa Tennant

"Development in the investment field in Asia related to eco-efficiency"

For the last 13 years Tessa has worked in the social investment business and launched, in 1988, the UK's first equity investment fund for sustainable development, now known as the Jupiter Ecology Fund.

In mid-1997, Tessa began working on social investment in the Asia Pacific region. The NPI Global Care Asia Pacific Fund was launched in July 1998. At the end of 2000 she co-founded ASrIA, The Association for Sustainable and Responsible Investment in Asia, an independent not for profit membership group for the region.

She has previously served on other environmental advisory panels for the UK Government and HRH The Prince of Wales and was co-founder and Chair of the UK Social Investment Forum, 1993-1997.


Dr. Thomas Streiff

"The integration of the sustainability concept in asset management and insurance - the case of Swiss Re"

Thomas Streiff is heading Swiss Re's Group Sustainability Management. His major tasks cover the representation of Swiss Re's environmental commitment, technical support of underwriters, portfolio managers and clients in environmental and ethical issues, coordination of the internal and external sustainability communication and coaching of Swiss Re Group in the implementation and maintenance of environmental management.

Before joining Swiss Re in 1997, Thomas was for 2 years technical advisor for a natural resource management project in India. Earlier, he worked as risk manager with Swiss Re. His responsibilities included the development of comprehensive rating systems and related data bases for the use of casualty risk assessment of different industries. From 1991-1993 he had an assignment as project advisor of a large development program in Tanzania. He is visiting lecturer at Swiss Federal Institute for Technology (ETH Zurich) at the Postgraduate Course for Developing Countries.

"Voluntary actions by Japanese industries for climate change mitigation".

Mr. Yasuo Hosoya acquired Bachelor's degree in Electronic Engineering from the Tokyo University and entered The Tokyo Electric Power Company Inc.(TEPCO) in 1961.

He was Assigned as General Manager of Environment Department of TEPCO in 1993, and since then, deals in planning and development of TEPCO's environmental policies and measures toward such issues as climate change mitigation, waste management and recycling, air pollution prevention, environmental management and so on.

Hosoya is now chairing Keidanren's (Japan Federation of Economic Organization) Task Force on Climate Change and FEPC's (Federation of Electric Power Companies) Commission on Environment.

Also Hosoya was appointed as one of the Lead Authors to the IPCC Special Report on Methodological and Technological Issues in Technology Transfer and of the Expert Reviewers to the IPCC Third Assessment Report.
