Grameen Trust ...An
Overview
The Grameen Bank (GB) in
Bangladesh has been implementing micro-credit programs for poverty
alleviation for the last 25 years. The success of Grameen in
reaching the poor has created a demand for Grameen training and
technical assistance, and in many cases for financial support, to
start and expand Grameen-type programs. In response to this demand,
Grameen Trust (GT) was formed in 1989. It is a private, non-profit
and non-governmental organization founded by Professor Muhammad
Yunus. The function of GT is to provide financial, training and
technical assistance to organizations that replicate the Grameen
Bank approach.
International Dialogue
Program:
The International Dialogue Program is a forum for potential
replicators to meet, discuss the set up of micro-credit programs for
the poor in their representative countries. It is conducted 3 to 4
times a year. The purpose of an International Dialogue is to expose
participants to the processes involved in the Grameen methodology of
micro-lending to the poor and its practical operation in the field.
It is also an excellent forum for getting acquainted with people and
institutions working in the field of poverty alleviation through the
provision of credit. It provides an opportunity for sharing of
experiences of how to begin such programs and how to sustain them.
The essentials of the Grameen methodology are discussed with special
reference to the country context in which replication is proposed.
Participants are subsequently expected to initiate similar efforts
in their respective countries by preparing project proposals and
submitting them to Grameen Trust for evaluation.
Financial assistance is provided to selected replication projects
in the form of seed capital funds. Selection for seed capital is
based on program design, management capability and consistency with
the objectives of GT. Seed capital is provided to facilitate the
initiation of GB replication projects as a combination of a soft
loan to capitalize a revolving loan fund, and an interest free loan
for operating costs. Projects, which have successfully utilized seed
capital received from Grameen Trust, are selected for scaling-up
funds in order to develop and institutionalize their credit programs
on a sustainable basis.
As of December 2000, GT had provided seed capital to 105 projects
and scaling up funds to 29 projects in 34 countries in Asia, Africa,
Europe and Latin America.
Grameen Trust monitors and evaluates the progress of all its
supported partner organizations around the world. GT also provides
comprehensive package of technical support to its partners through
its training, workshop and technical assistance programs.
International Training Program:
As a result of the specialized needs of International Dialogue
participants for other opportunities to learn from the GB model, GT
conducts an International Training Program. This program provides an
opportunity to gain more detailed information about the methods and
application of the Grameen Bank model, as well the observation of
GB's activities at the field level for an extended period of time.
The specific duration of the training may be negotiated depending on
many factors. Furthermore, intensive training on operating
procedures of the Grameen Bank Financial System (GBFS) is an
essential condition for the successful implementation of the GB
approach.
The International Training Division of Grameen Bank arranges
training programs throughout the year. Trainees stay at Grameen
sites and learn from Grameen members and staff. The Grameen exposure
program usually involves a briefing at the Head Office in Dhaka
before the field visits. Following their return from the field and
prior to their departure, a review meeting is held for the trainees'
back at the Head Office. The staff of the International Training
Division are facilitators for the training. Specialized training
programs for Area Managers, Branch Managers, Trainers and
Computer Operators have also been organized by the Trust.
Grameen Trust has introduced a series of workshops for staff and
management of Grameen replicators to bring Grameen Bank's experience
on a spectrum of management issues to replicators and to create a
forum of exchange of ideas and strategies between organizations.
These workshops are hosted both in Bangladesh as well as outside.
Workshops include targeting of the poor, credit discipline,
financial modeling to scale up to viability, planning, monitoring,
evaluation, financial reporting, internal auditing, repayment
problems and rehabilitation strategies.

Grameen Global Network:
In February 1997, the Microcredit Summit set a goal to reach 100
million of the poorest families, especially the women of those
families, with credit and other financial services for
self-employment by the year 2005. The Grameen Trust, as part of its
vision to see a poverty free world, is committed to reaching 10
million poor families, one tenth of the Summit's goal, through its
network of partners worldwide by 2005. The Grameen Global Network
(GGN), coordinated by the Grameen Trust, will provide a forum for
the exchange of experiences, learning and information between the
partners, friends and supporters of Grameen to enable us to plan
and coordinate our work effectively and monitor our progress towards
the attainment of our goal. Visit our web-site
http://www.grameen.com/grameen/gtrust and
http://www.grameen.com/grameen/gbank for a GGN membership form,
details about GGN, and the activities of Grameen Trust and Grameen
Bank respectively. If you wish to join the Grameen Global
Network, please complete the membership form and return to Grameen
Trust, Grameen Bank Bhaban, Mirpur 2, Dhaka-1216, Bangladesh, Fax:

Our Newsletter - 'Grameen Dialogue'
Grameen Trust publishes a quarterly newsletter entitled: 'Grameen
Dialogue'. The annual subscription charge for the newsletter is $
25, inclusive of postage and handling. The newsletter is available
by e-mail, as well as on the web at
www.grameen.com/grameen/trust/dialogue. All payment must be made
either by bank draft or by a check drawn on any U.S. based bank,

Bangladesh.
People's Fund:
Grameen Trust initiated the process of creating a US$ 100 million
'People's Fund' to support Grameen replication programs globally. GT
believes the role of each individual is a valuable contribution and
inevitably will guide governments in terms of aiding global and
regional development oriented financial institutions. We hope to
reach one million people who would contribute US$ 100 (or equivalent
in other currencies) each to this Fund, to make our vision a
reality. 100% of the fund will be used to provide loans directly to
the poor.
You may also visit our web-site at http://www.peoplesfund.org for
further information regarding the 'People's Fund'.
Grameen Internship Program:
A variety of internships are offered at Grameen. The Grameen
Bank, through its Grameen Bank International Program division,
offers individual projects that are for the pursuit of research on a
specific topic of interest. Field trips or case studies can be
arranged at GB branch offices. The Grameen Trust offers
internships that are conducted in the following departments:
(1) Grameen Bank Replication Programs (GBRP) (2) Research in
Poverty Alleviation (PRPA)
Individual research projects on an area chosen by the intern can
also be pursued. Grameen Trust supports interns by allowing access
to GT facilities and resources, and involvement in daily operations.
If you wish to seek an internship with Grameen, forward us your
resume and your mailing address so that we may send you further
details when necessary. Please inform us of your intended arrival
date and duration of stay so that we can facilitate the process. It
would also help if you would indicate your specific areas of
interest and any prior experience. It is important to note that
Grameen is unable to provide any remuneration for interns, and we
strongly advise you to bring sufficient funds for the duration of
your stay in Bangladesh.
Young people around the world have the opportunity to volunteer
their services to GT through the NetAid program. If you have any
additional queries, please do not hesitate to contact us.
