Environment
Key Concerns : The overwhelming use of high sulfur coal as a fuel has polluted the air and produced acid rain which is damaging forests. Water shortages are experienced throughout the country, especially in urban areas. Industrial affluents have contaminated the water and much of the population does not have access to potable water. Less than 10% of sewage receives treatment. Deforestation. Approximately one fifth of agricultural land has been lost to soil erosion and economic development during the last three decades. Desertification.
Treaties that have been signed Ratified: Biodiversity, Climate Change, Ozone protection, Traffic in Endangered species (80% of reporting requirement met).
