The Hong Kong Sustainable Development Index 2003

The Hong Kong Sustainable Development Index annually measures the progress on key social, environmental and economic priorities that are important for furthering the sustainable development of Hong Kong.

The Canadian Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong, in partnership with the Statistical Consulting Unit of City University, a formal, independent and professional survey: The Hong Kong Sustainable Development Index 2003 was  conducted from August 29th to September 29th, 2003. Its purpose was to ask the Hong Kong community: how important 10 priorities, previously identified in a multi-stakeholder engagement process are to Hong Kong's sustainable development and quality of life; what these priorities mean to them; and, how well they believe the Hong Kong community is performing on these issues.  The survey results provide a baseline of how well the community perceives that Hong Kong is progressing in these areas.

2003 Survey Key Findings:

1.  Top 10 priorities identified by stakeholders in 2002 continue to be the most important priorities for the community.

2.  Most Important Issues: Education and Healthy Economy

3.  Most Satisfied with HK Performance:  Health & Hygiene

4.  Most Surprising: following July 1 protest, Civil Liberties and Human Rights were seen as less critical.

In coming years, the annual survey results will be measured against the 2003 baseline index score of 56.4 to create a community measure that will tell people what progress is made in ensuring sustainable development in Hong Kong.
